Since its launch 24 years ago, Auto & General has consistently been at the forefront of innovation and service delivery, achieving many innovative firsts and winning numerous awards.

Here is a list of our firsts:

• the first to maximise efficiency through computerised underwriting
• launched telephonic insurance
• first direct underwriter in South Africa
• first to inspect vehicles before going on risk
• first insurer to use fully automated direct debits
• first to send clients’ damaged vehicles to drive-in assessment centres
• worked with a major manufacturer of vehicle security products to develop SA’s first self-arming immobiliser, this research led to the development of the country’s first anti-hijack system
• the first short-term insurer to be awarded the Readability Mark by “Plain Business Writing”
• the first short-term insurance company to introduce a Service Charter for clients.

• in 2004, we were awarded an A+ rating for claim-paying ability by the Global Credit Rating Company
• in 2004, we were voted “Best Personal lines short-term insurance company of the year” by members of the South African Financial Services Intermediaries Association (SAFISIA)
• voted Top Broker Insurer, in the Markinor/Sunday Times Top Brands Survey in 2004.
