Just as your home needs a good clean once a year, so do your insurance policies. Below are some trusted tips that will help get your household insurance and other insurance policies looking brand new again.

1. Start big

Have you recently moved into a new house? Did you renovate your kitchen? Or maybe you bought a new car? Those are some of the questions you need to ask yourself and discuss with your broker so that your car and household insurance policies can get updated accordingly.

2. Out with the old and in with the new

You might have bought a new music entertainment system or a bigger fridge. Did you remember to update your policy and add these new items? If not, call your broker as soon as possible so you can have that household insurance information updated. It’s about more than adding new things to your home inventory. If there are items that you no longer own, you can remove them from your list so you are covered only for what you currently own.

3. Maintenance is key

Remember, any upgrades to your security could impact your premium. Make sure you comply with your policy conditions regarding minimum security in and around your home. These conditions often include a burglar alarm, burglar bars, and security gates. If you need to update your home’s security, make sure you let your broker know so they can update your policy accordingly or provide you with a suitable home contents insurance quote if you don’t already have that specific item covered.

4. Keep an inventory list

Also keep in mind that the value of your home contents and personal items increases or decreases with each passing year. It is your responsibility as the homeowner to keep an accurate inventory list with updated values. Should you need to claim due to damage, theft or loss, your pay-out will then be an accurate reflection of the value of your goods.

Even with these tips in mind, remember you as the homeowner are solely and fully responsible for keeping your home as secure as possible. It’s up to you to keep your valuables insured to the maximum amount of their value and to update your household insurance information.
